After my mom died, my wife wrote a beautiful obituary for her. It was perfect and captured my mom’s many wonderful attributes, like showing up when it counted and making people smile.
I took my happy/sad obituary to the local newspaper and I said, How much. They said, We’ll get back to you. They got back to me fast and I sort of wish they never did because now I felt guilty for not being able to afford the $972.00 to put my mom’s obituary in the newspaper for one day.
So I started to chop out text and the more I chopped the less of mom remained. I decided that I would have to settle on the $400 minimal charge version which was what? I wasn’t sure. Was it 200 words? 300 words? They wouldn’t tell me.
“Betty’s prowess in the kitchen was legendary and she loved to feed people. She found joy in decorating her home and was happiest when she”
When she ate pizza? Fed the homeless? Ran a numbers racket. What?!
Sorry that’s all the words you get for $400.
Can I say that the funeral business seems a lot like the wedding business. If you get married or die, someone is going to pay 3 times more than she/he should.
I want my mom’s obituary to say what I wanted it to say.
So, I built a website and put my mom’s and dad’s obits on it.
I liked that a lot.
And now I invite you to do the same.
Write the obit you want.
Send it to us.
Send the link out through social media.
And your loved ones live online forever:-)
